Photo shoot

These are the most ideal photos taken for my music magazine. The model featured in these images is the 'artist' I will use for my front cover image and double page spread image. I shall also include at least 1 smaller photo of her on my contents page.

This image is simple yet effective. The close up makes the image extremely detailed however the fact the model is looking away form the camera is unconventional for a magazine.
I really like this image. The model is looking straight down the camera lens meaning that it creates familiarity with the audience. The slight smile the model has creates a sense of mystery which entices the reader to pick up the magazine and read more.
I think this image conveys a sense of playfulness that would be more likely to appear within a more pop related magazine as opposed to an indie magazine. It is for this reason that I will not use this image in my final products.
This image conveys a similar sense of playfulness but the attire and body language of the model gives it a bit more edginess. The issue with this image is that it has a lot of blank space on it. this would however make it appropriate for a double page spread. I may consider this image for this element.
As a whole I really like this image. It goes against conventions which is an element often found in Indie or Alternative magazines. It would be more suitable for a poster pull out as opposed to a front cover, contents page or double page spread image.

Again this image would be more suitable for a magazine as the model is central. Her attire suggests an indie musician and the fact she is looking away from the camera would entices the reader to pick up the magazine in an attempt to find out what she is looking at.
This image does not convey the indie attitude I wish to be present in my magazine. It conveys a playfulness and would more likely to be a holiday photo. It does not convey the professionalism I wish to convey.

The positioning of the model in this image is good for a number of reason. Firstly a sense of intrigued is created and secondly the overall positioning means it would be suitable for a double page spread.
I really like the connotations of this image. As a whole the image conveys a sense of rebellion and individualism. These are two ideologies intended within my magazine. This image would be useful for the front cover.
The eye contact made with this image is striking and eye catching. The fact that the eye make up on the model is dark only intensifies this effect.
This image is lovely. The lighting focuses your eyes on the models eyes. The make up used defines and outlines these features creating an elegant look. The coiffed hair and the teddy creates a relaxed childish feel but still with a sense of intrigue and passion.
As with the above image, this image conveys a sense of youth and excitement. The pose connotes a sense of fun and a youthful lack of responsibility. However the facial expression on this image is not suitable for a magazine front cover.

This image is lovely. Unfortunately the lighting has created a yellow hue over the image. This means it is not suitable for a magazine. If the image was without this colouring it would be perfect for the front cover.

This image is ace. It connotes excitement, youthfulness, liveliness and a sense of playfulness I wish to be associated with my artist. This is a strong possibility for the front cover image.
This image is so simple yet so ideal for the double page spread. The image is already split into two meaning that the text would go to the left of the page, the image to the right. Also the photo needs very little doing to it in terms of manipulation.

This is another image that would of been ideal for the double page spread if only it didn't have the yellow hue on the image.

This image is lovely. The composition and lighting echoes the serenity and mystery intended with this image. The fact she is looking away from the camera means that it would be more effective as a poster image. Only a small bit of editing is necessary with this image in order to get rid of the camera lens flare and the mark on the models arm.

The expression on the models face connotes a sense of playfulness that would be more appropriate for a pop magazine. it is for this reason I will probably not make use of this particular image.

Other photos I will use on my contents page are:

I love this image but it does not connote the ideologies and attitudes I wish to convey within my magazine.

One generic convention of Indie music magazines is that the images used do not always present the artist in a serious manner. The image above and the image below are two examples of this attitude, both of wish I will include in my final products.

This image was taken at my friends concert. They had strobe lights in use and the colouring of this image is a result of this strobe lighting. It does however show the singers emotions and would be effective if used on the contents page.

This image is lovely. I decided to make use of the snowy weather as I knew this would make a perfect background for the image. The model is smiling which makes the audience smile too. I will probably use this on my contents page.

As mentioned earlier, I used photos from my friends concert. This is the group that played. I intended to use a full group shot on my double page spread. Unfortunately the lighting and background prevented me from being able to take a successful group shot that was to my pleasing.

Names of Featured Artists

In order to keep to the conventions of my music magazine genre, the names of the featured artists must also connote the ideologies and values that an alternative music magazine gives.
Some possible choice for featured band names are ;

God gave us music

Its too late for Rock and Roll

Outburst

Psychotherapy

Encode

One

Engage

Magazine Name Ideas

The first title I though of was simply 'Rhythm' as this word is strongly associated with music.
Here are some possibilities for the type face I could use if this was the title I was to choose.

Another title I thought of was 'Download'. This suggests that the music featured in the magazine is worthy of downloading. Here are some possibilities of the type face I can use.

Another idea for a title for the magazine 'Pazaz!' Pazaz is unique and connotes excitement. Two elements I wish to portray with my magazine.

Pricing and Publishing my magazine

Taking into account the low income of my target audience, the price of the magazine must be within an reasonable price range to allow them to be able to purchase it. It is for this reason i have decided to price the magazine at £2.50. If the price where any higher and similar to the prices of magazines such as Q (£3.99) my target sudience would simply be unable to afford it. My chosen price of £2.50 is similar to the price of NME (£2.30) which is another magazine with a similar targeted age group of the magazine wish to create. My magazine will be published on a fortnightly basis which allows the audience to be able to afford to purchase the magazine every issue as they can save the money to buy it.

Target Audience for my magazine

The target audience for my magazine is a an alternative audience (18-24). It will appeal to both genders of this audience as this creates a wider target audience. Through my research I have learnt that both genders can be attracted by featuring bands of both genders. This allows the audience to aspire to be like the featured bands and also take inspiration from them. The targeted audience will be of low income, typically in a C2, D, E socio-economic grouping. This is because a lot of these people will be students or people on low income and who will be most like to buy the type of magazine I aim to create. This low incomes of the target audience will have to be taken into consideration when I choose the price for my magazine as I need to make is affordable for such an audience. This may also affect issues such as the quality of the magazine paper it could be printed on. My audience will expect to see the latest artists as well as current ones, movement within the alternative music scene chart-wise, in depth personal interviews with the bands, reviews of cd/singles etc. I will fulfil these desires by featuring such articles in my magazine. The images I use have to be 100% original therefore the featured artist/s have to be new up and coming bands. I must ensure that the presentation of the is still appealing despite them being unknown to the audience. Another technique that will ensure that the issue is actually appealing is by using words such as 'Exclusive' and 'Hot' on the front cover. Such words connote importance and attract the readers attention to them.

Magazine Analysis Double Page Spread 3

The double page spread of Q magazine consists of the central image with a small anchorage blurb placed on top of the band. The central image of the band Take That fills the entire page. The style of the image reflects the band perfectly as it suggests a boy band esque persona. Something is happening in every inch of the image therefore the eye is constantly looking for new elements. This keeps the readers attention on the page. The leather jacket and jeans again supports this boy band persona that is often associated with Take That however add the dress code to the peds that 3 of the 5 members are sitting on and an edgier, more mature attitude is suggested which indicates that yes this is a boy band but they've now grown up. The image is obviously a posed one which adds a sense of light-heartiness and humor to the image which again suggest the bands values and ideologies.
In the top left hand corner of the page is a small graphic advertising the 'Q awards' 2010'. This is used as a method of internal advertising within the magazine and promotes an event associated with the magazine itself. The blurb for this story features in the lower left hand corner of the page and is written straight onto the image. This type of positioning of the text is affective as it clearly indicates that the text is about the image. It connects the image and text and also allows the eye to travel from left to right across the image once the story has been read.
unusually for a double-page spread the banner headline is found at the bottom of the image. The reason it is placed here is because Take That as are a recognisable band they do not necessarily need their name written at the bottom. Instead the headline 'The fifth element' indicates this story is about the full reform of the band. They type face used is plain but affective as it is written in black then white. These colours stand out from the background they are on which makes them eye catching. In the lower right hand corner is another graphic advertising the 'Hall of fame' that features within this particular issue of Q. There is no previous mention of such a thing before this page so it acts as a teaser for the magazine and shows what else is to follow from this story.
